Loosh Interview | Respect The Artist | Lucia Stavros

Lucia 'Loosh' Stavros is a New York-based harpist, singer/songwriter, and producer. Lucia’s projects explore the spiritual and emotional connections developed in music and through music. As described by The Deli Magazine, Lucia’s “show-stealing, often mysterious lyricism, creates an intergenerational atmosphere chamber pop that feels as modern as it does baroque.” She is currently producing a solo album to be released in 2023.

How did you get your Artist name?

Longtime nickname

How did you get into creating?

As a young child, I was fascinated by classical music and would listen to it constantly. I would imagine stories to the each piece and move to the music. At age 5, I began singing in the school choir and a few years later started taking harp lessons. Music soon became the most important thing in my life and has continued to shape the way I exist in this world. Listening to all kinds of music is my practice. I've explored many aspects of music-making over the years, but right now I'm producing my first solo release.

How has creating changed your life?

The process of creating forces me to reflect on myself in new ways. This act of reflecting over and over is what creates a piece of art. Making art compels my life forward.

Where are you from?

Cleveland

How did growing up in your neighborhood/city affect you?

I grew up in a community where people have a strong commitment to being loyal and looking out for the people in their lives. Strangers are friendly. I seek that feeling of community when creating and making music with others.

What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?

I studied harp at the New England Conservatory of Music and continued on to study at L’Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris as a Fulbright Scholar in France.

What does your current setup look like?

Lately, I've been performing as a solo player on harp and voice.

Who inspires you? Why do they inspire you?

I've always been inspired by Missy Elliot and Mariah Carey because I love their unique music. They're two artists who took hardship and turned it into positivity and prolific music making.

What is your goal when you create?

My goal is always to communicate a message. I feel vague intentions behind music lands poorly, so fully preparing what my musical voice needs to say gives my creations purpose, energy and direction.

Why do you create?

I create because it feeds my soul. I can slow down time when I create.

What's your go-to song right now and why is it important to you?

I can't stop listening to In Bloom by Nirvana lately because I like that electricity feeling the song captures.

What is your dream as an artist and what steps are you taking to reach your dream?

I need to take this music on tour because I love performing more than anything. I love to travel too and meet people on their turf and get an idea of what life is like in another place. I just love adventure and rock n roll.

What is the best advice you would give someone with a dream?

Expect and tolerate rejection because you will get more of it than solid offers. Do not give up.

Tell us about your most recent release

I'm ecstatic to release my debut ten-track experimental pop album this year. Some of the songs I've worked on for many years, so it feels wonderful to put them out into the world. I performed harp, vocals, piano, organ, synths and harpsichord alongside other instrumentalists on this record. I have a lot to say and I felt that putting it to music was the best way to say it. I just put my whole heart into it so check it!
