Napoleon Da Legend 'The Colossus of GOATS' Interview

Napoleon Da Legend sat down with Stereotype to talk about the brand new project 'The Colossus of GOATS'.

How did this project come to be?

When the Covid period started, my brother Sicknature (other half of Supa Kaiju) proposed to produce a full solo album for me. We have been crafting this project ever since and I'm happy to release it to the world today. This album features Sicknature, Nejma Nefertiti, Eloh Kush, Brian Bars Burns, DJ Scribe & DJ TMB.

What inspired the title?

Jean-Paul Botsch is an artist who offered to work on the cover art for me on future projects. I had this album's music finished and I told him I'd like the cover to look like the Colossus of Rhodes (a mythical statue in that island of Greece) with that name. When he submitted the artwork to me, he had titled it "The Colossus of GOATS" maybe something that came to him subconsciously. I love the way it looked and I just decided to run with it. I'm not one to shy away from bold claims with the name I carry.

Where did you record this album?

I recorded this album in Brooklyn starting at the beginning of the pandemic. Sicknature works from Copenhagen in Denmark. He would send me small batches of ideas and I selected the ones that "spoke" to me at the time.

What is your favorite track? Why?

That's a tough question for me to answer. I'm a very prolific artist and I have a certain workflow that is free-flowing. I hardly ever pre-meditate what I create. I craft it until I feel I got my feelings across and I sort of "let it go" without much thought of going back to it later to contemplate it. If I were to pick I'd probably say "Rest in Perfection" because dealing with loss has been a constant in the last decade. Also, I appreciate Sicknature's verse about a Danish artist he looked up to who passed away and the impact he had on his life. I always find it special when an artist I invite to a project shares something very insightful and personal.

What is your favorite line from the album?

The line that comes to mind is from "Self-Talk" when I tell myself "Dropping projects like they dropping singles". It's my fifth album this year. I feel it rings true even if it sounds like a "flex" on my part.

Who helped make this album what it is?

I believe the Sicknature sonic universe helped build the sense of urgency and epicosity. The other half is the times we are living in. The covid epidemic accelerated many changes and totally reformulated how humans live in society. Social media's dominance and hegemony have colonized our minds further with various effects on us individually and as a species. The project gave me an outlet to journal and express my feelings and views while living in that moment.

If you could remix any song and feature any artist, what song would it be and who would you feature on it?

If was able to make anything happen. My imagination envisions a Remix of "Hustla" featuring Kool G Rap. The content of his rhymes always had me see him as a slick street hustler and survivor. His gift is unique and I would love to hear how it would sound with him on a signature beat trading rhymes with me. It makes sense in my head at the very least. Dream features are not interesting to anybody unless everybody is mutually motivated though. I respect him as the icon and master that he is and that doesn't hinge on whether or not we would have a chance to work together one day.

What's your dream?

My dream is that poverty would be eradicated from the world, there's obviously more than enough money to go around. That's without debate.
On a personal tip, my dream would be to have the health and the wherewithal to continuously create freely and contribute some interesting art to the world.

What is some advice you would give to someone with a dream?

My advice is to not take all advice to heart. Be courageous, trust your gut and go.
