Stella Prince Interview | Respect The Artist
How did you get into creating?
I’ve always known that this is exactly what I was meant to do. I begged my parents for voice lessons when I was 4, and started playing piano when I was 7. I actually learned guitar in school for like six months when I was 9, but really hated it because my fingers were way too tiny to play. It wasn’t until I was 13 that I really fell in love with guitar, and took it very seriously. Now it’s my main instrument; and I write all my songs on it. I started songwriting at 10, the day my childhood dog passed away. That intense emotion made me go to my piano and write my very first song.
Where are you from?
I am from the folk music capital of America, otherwise known as Woodstock, New York. It’s been such an amazing experience to be surrounded with brilliant musicians my entire life. I was lucky enough to see legends such as Pete Seeger and Levon Helm live in concert from a very early age.
What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?
In 2020, and into 2021, right as the pandemic was making headway, I pretty much began my professional music career as a singer/songwriter. It was the first time that things began to happen. I worked with a publicist for the first time, released music for the first time, traveled to Nashville for the first time, got management, got artist development, and booked my first tour. I think the pandemic actually pushed me positively to focus entirely on my career, and nothing else but my career.
What does your current setup look like? My music room consists of my piano, the same piano I’ve had since I was 7, and five different guitars! Each one is really special to me, like one was my mom’s from 1970, and another is the first guitar I bought when I was 9.
Who inspires you? Why?
I have so many inspirations from all kinds of genres and decades. I love folk music of course, like Joni Mitchell, and I really love classic country, like The Judds, Patsy Cline, and Emmylou Harris. Oldies music is something that I grew up with and found tons of early inspiration from, like Judy Garland and Doris Day, and then I also adore 70’s pop music, like Karen Carpenter and Carole King. Pretty much singers from all walks of life!
What is your goal when you create?
To make people feel something. When I write a song, I want it to be something people can really relate to and understand and totally get. I want them to think, “Hey, that’s what I feel every day.” I love writing about universal topics like loneliness and heartbreak because most people have experienced that.
Why do you create?
Because it’s what I was born to do. I couldn’t see myself having any other future.
What's your go-to song right now and why is it important to you?
The song “Vienna” by Billy Joel is a masterpiece. I just discovered it a month ago when I was scrolling through TikTok and I heard someone use that song and I was totally shocked by the heart-wrenching lyrics. I listen to it almost every day. It’s such a brilliant song that applies to every young person. I can really relate to it at this point in my life.
What is the best advice you would give someone with a dream?
Dreams start everything. It’s the first step to your life, your future, and to success. I dreamed of fame and stardom since I was three years old. I’d say listen to your dreams, of course, and it will take you somewhere you never imagined you could go.
Tell us about your most recent release
My latest release is called “Crying on a Saturday Night”. I dropped it on March 18th of this year and celebrated release day in Nashville, which was incredible. We had an amazing performance and party at Cabana Taps on Music Row, which is a night I’ll never forget. I have been incredibly lucky and humbled to see the reaction to this song from others. My debut music video for “Crying on a Saturday Night” came out in April, and we managed to get support from outlets like CMT, Ditty TV, and The Country Network, which was a dream come true.
