Brooklyn & Adie of SoapBae Interview | Respect the Founder

What is the name of your business?

SoapBaeLLC

Where are you from?

Brooklyn, New York

What was your first business? How old were you?

Our first business was Soapbae and we were 40 & 33.

When did you know working for yourself was the way to go?

I wanted the ability to pursue projects I was passionate about, set my own schedule and build something that aligned with my values.

Can you talk us through your career to date and how you found your way to where you are now?

For as long as I could remember, eczema had been a part of my life. The red, itchy patches were more than just a nuisance, they were a constant reminder that most skincare products weren’t made with people like me in mind. Store bought soaps only seemed to make things worse, leaving my skin irritated and raw. One day, after another frustrating trip to the dermatologist, and being under lockdown during COVID, I decided it was time to take matters into my own hands.

I started small, researching natural oils, butters, and herbs known for their soothing properties. I learned about the healing power of ingredients like shea butter, oatmeal and aloe Vera which are gentle on the skin and free from harsh chemicals. With a notebook full of ideas and a heart full of determination, I ordered my first batch of raw materials and set up a makeshift work space in my kitchen.

My first bar of soap was simple: olive oil, coconut oil, and colloidal oatmeal. The moment I tried it, I knew I was onto something. For the first time, my skin felt clean without the sting of dryness or irritation. Encouraged by this small success, I began experimenting, adding essential oils for fragrance and other nourishing ingredients like avocado butter and calendula.

Word spread quickly among friends and family who also struggled with sensitive skin. They loved the way my soaps felt, and soon, they were asking for more. Realizing the demand, I decided to turn my passion into a business. I named it [Your Business Name], a tribute to my journey of finding peace for my skin.

Today, I create chemical-free products for all skin types, but my mission remains the same: to provide safe, natural skincare for everyone, especially those like me who thought they’d never find relief. My eczema sparked this journey, and now I get to share its healing story with others.

What inspired you to start your business?

Inspired by my own struggles, I set out to create natural skincare for people with sensitive skin. Every bar of soap, every jar of cream I make, carries that same purpose, to provide gentle solutions for those who need them most.

What are some of the biggest challenges you see in your market?

One of the biggest challenges I see in the market is getting people to shift their mindset and try all natural products. Many people have grown accustomed to chemical filled products, often associating them with immediate results or believing they’re the only option available. It can be hard to break through those habits and misconceptions.

Who was one of your biggest supporters early on?

My biggest supporter from the start was my partner. She was my sounding board, cheerleader, and even my first customer. Her belief in my dream gave me the confidence to pursue it fully and I will always be grateful for her unwavering encouragement.

What advice do you have for professionals looking to get started in your industry?

My advice to anyone looking to get started in this industry is to invest time in research and testing. Learn everything you can about ingredients, their properties, and how they interact with different skin types. Understand the science behind formulation, and don’t be afraid to experiment—it’s through trial and error that you’ll find what truly works.

Testing is key. Test your products on yourself, then expand to family and friends for feedback. This will not only help you refine your formulas but also build confidence in your creations.

Lastly, be patient. Building a skincare business takes time, dedication, and a lot of learning along the way. Stay passionate, stay curious, and never stop improving.

Can you recommend one good business book, business podcast/radio show?

I’d highly recommend a podcast called “The Do You Rules” by @clichejeff on YouTube. It’s an inspiring and motivational podcast that focuses on changing your mindset, overcoming self-doubt, and chasing your dreams unapologetically. Jeff’s approach is relatable and actionable, making it a great resource for anyone looking to take control of their goals and build the life they’ve envisioned. Whether you’re starting a business or pursuing a personal passion, this podcast is packed with valuable insights to help you stay focused and motivated.

What is some advice you would give to someone with a dream?

Believe in yourself and your vision, even when others might not see it yet. There will be challenges, but perseverance and a clear sense of purpose will carry you through. Surround yourself with supportive people who uplift and inspire you, and don’t be afraid to ask for help or guidance.
