How did you get your Producer/Artist name?

I got my name from a vegan facebook group in which people were coming up with what their vegan soundcloud rapper name would be. Someone suggested Lil SoyBoy and I kinda liked it but wanted to change it to something more me. So I removed the Lil and switched out the y’s for j’s and there it was, Sojboj.

Where are you from?

I’m from a town in northern Sweden called Umeå. There’s lots of snow here right now.

How did you get into Producing?

I’ve played in bands since I was 13 and have been writing my own songs since then. But I got into making hiphop beats in spring of 2018 when my friend showed me all the built in synths and sample loops already in to Logic Pro. So then I started experimenting a lot with that and eventually I wanted to incorporate my musical past into these hiphop beats. So I started playing around with electric guitars and give it a more emo vibe. Tuned my guitar to DADGAD and basically wrote a song like i would in my old band but I added trap drums instead of hardcore ones. And that’s where I’m at now I guess.

What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?

Basically watched a whole lot of Youtube videos. Like Andrew Huang, Kyle Beats, Simon Servida and LifestyleDidIt. I took a lot of inspiration from them and really just trying a bunch of things. Like what happens if I press this button and so on haha!

What did your first set up look like?

It was a shitty laptop I got from school and the cheapest sound card from Thomann. It had a volume knob, a telejack and a headphone jack. No gain control or anything. But it got me hooked for life!

What does your current setup look like?

It’s nothing fancy. Just a Macbook Pro from 2017, a Scarlet Focusrite Solo and a 32 key MIDI-keyboard. I have more stuff too but I’ve noticed I prefer a minimalistic setup so this is basically what I only use, most of the time.

If you could produce for any artist (dead or alive), who would it be?

Honestly I would go for something very unexpected. There’s two bands that have inspired me so much in the past and that’s Pianos Become The Teeth and Touché Amore. And if they ever want to do a fun emorap crossover collab together I wouldn’t hesitate for even a second! Hmu!

What is your goal when you create?

I try to approach everything with curiosity. Not being scared of trying new things. What I really like about writing music  in your DAW, is that “mistakes” can sometimes end up being the perfect answer! Be playful, but know what’s enough too!

What's your go-to song right now?

Lil Aaron’s Dark Matter gets stuck in my head a lot these days. Just wish there was some hard hitting drums on it, it would be so fire! Does anyone know of a remix they can link me?

What is your dream as a Producer?

I really like working with other people, so definitely to be working together in the studio with some bigger name artists. But I also want to focus on my own music. I just released my third single called “Catharsis” and it’s out now on all major streaming platforms.

What is some advice you would give to someone with a dream to become a Producer?

Don’t let anything or anyone stop you! If that’s your dream then just go for it! There’s gonna be rough patches but you just gotta get over them and keep working for it, because the wins are so f*cking rewarding!

Where can people find you? (social media, website, etc)

My instagram is @sojboj_ and you can find me on Spotify under Sojboj!
