Lex Nour Interview | Respect The Producer Interview

Thanks for being part of our interview series!

Thanks for having me.

How did you get your name?

My original name is Alex.  A few of years ago, my friends started calling me Lex for some reason. So once I needed a producer name I added my last name to it “nour”.

Where are you from?

Ottawa, ON, Canada. Most people don’t know it but it’s the capital city of Canada. It’s a 4 hour drive from Toronto.

How did you get into Producing?

I was talking to one of my friends who raps as a hobby. He told me he needed beats but doesn’t know how to get them. I told him since I play guitar I could easily make a beat for him. It wasn’t that easy when I tried. But I kept going until I got better at it and soon realized it was what I wanted to do.

What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?

I spent countless hours practicing and watching YouTube tutorials. That’s all you need. You don’t need school to be a good producer.

What did your first set up look like?

MacBook Air, an Akai MIDI keyboard, Apple headphones, and a cheap Samson USB mic.

What does your current setup look like?

MacBook Pro, Akai Midi, Yamah HS8 speakers, Neumann 102, Apollo Twin interface, acoustic treatment, big screen monitor, and more.

If you could produce for any artist (dead or alive), who would it be?

Juice WRLD or Travis Scott

What is your goal when you create?

I just enjoy making beats. I would always make them even if I didn’t get paid because it’s my passion. Now I just keep enjoying the process but I also get paid to do what I love.

What's your go-to song right now?

I don’t have a go-to song. I honestly just listen to everything all the time. I don’t keep 1-3 songs on repeat like most people. I try to listen to everything all the time to stay inspired and keep myself aware of what style/sounds are trending.

What is your dream as a Producer?

I want to become a big name producer. Eventually I want to get big artists on my songs and release my own singles and projects.

What is some advice you would give to someone with a dream to become a Producer?

Trust your process, and don’t stop working. 1 hour a day isn’t going to pay off. If your stuck in a bad job, spend every hour you can outside your 9-5 practicing, watching tutorial videos, and focusing on your music until you can successfully transition. I worked a desk job from 7am-3pm, and worked on my music from 5pm-2am. Confidence is the most important thing. You have to trust your process and believe everyday that you will become what you dream of becoming.
