Austin Cannon Interview | Respect the Producer Interview

How did you get your name?

It’s simply the name I was born with!

How did you get into Producing?

I was part of a band for a number of years and helped write and produce our own music. Once the band started to split ways, I started exploring producing music for other artists/bands. I loved every second of it so I focused on making being a Producer a career.

What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?

I attended the Academy of Contemporary Music in Oklahoma City, OK and received a B.A. in music business and production. That led to an internship at Studio Six01 in Burbank, CA. But the real test was moving to Nashville, TN on a whim and starting from the ground up. I’ve always had the “run before you can walk”mentality and sometimes that has bitten me in the ass. But in this instance I couldn’t imagine doing it any other way.

What did your first set up look like?

I had my MacBook Pro, a pair of M-Audio BX5 Monitors, and a MPK 49 Controller all on my IKEA desk in my studio apartment in Los Angeles, CA.

What does your current setup look like?

My current setup consists of a custom made studio desk with a pull out keyboard tray for my Axiom 61 Controller. I’m still running a MacBook Pro but with an Apollo Twin MKII. Over the years I’ve also collected a few of my favorite analog and digital synths: Roland Juno 106, Korg SV1, Moog Subsequent 37, Roland Juno 1, Moog Minituar, and a ROLI Seaboard.

How did you get your Producer/Artist name?

I operate under my given name for all projects.

If you could produce for any artist (dead or alive), who would it be?

I would love to produce for Coldplay, The 1975, Muse, Dua Lipa, The Weekend, and plenty more.

What is your goal when you create?

To be intentional with every part and sound.

What is your dream as a Producer?

I would love to build a larger creative space that is consistently inspiring to me and the artists I work with.

What is some advice you would give to someone with a dream to become a Producer? 

There’s no singular right way to do this. It’s just a matter of jumping into the music industry and proving you have something to offer.
