Young God Blow Interview | Respect The Artist
How did you get your Artist name?
Funny enough the origin of the name came from my childhood friends rhyming my actual nickname (Joe) with the word “Blow” and just making fun of me haha. It got to the point that even my family members caught on to the nickname and I’d catch my mom calling me “Joe Blow” around the house. It eventually stuck and when I started my music journey I kinda wanted to keep the “Blow” because everyone called me some variation of it already. Later decided to add the “Young God” part because I believe I have the power to change the world with my music and I wanted my name to emulate that, and here we are!
How did you get into creating?
Growing up I was always surrounded by music. My grandfather was always playing different instruments around me & my father was a huge hip-hop head. Leading into middle school I was extremely introverted and shy but I loved the idea of doing something creative and showing the world. I decided to join my school band, drama club & poetry club to kind of help break away that timidness while also excelling in those creative outlets. I loved drama but my true passion lied in music, there’s just something about creating music that makes me feel a sense of euphoria when everything clicks the right way. Fast forward to high school and that poetry side manifested into wanting to experiment writing rhymes on beats and once I graduated Young God Blow was born and I was fully committed to being a music artist.
How has creating changed your life?
If it wasn’t for creating I don’t think I’d truly know how to express myself. In its own way it has changed my personality drastically (for the better haha) since I become more outgoing I was able to make connections with people that blossomed into great relationships. Those people being a huge part of my life and helping me grow each day as both a person and an artist is truly a blessing. Also it has given me a deep appreciation towards artist in every single realm, creating is a beautiful thing that should be celebrated and I’d love to see more people show that.
Where are you from?
I was born in Brooklyn, New York, moved to Florida when I was about 3 but came back up when I was around 10 and that’s when the love for music and creating really sprouted.
How did growing up in your neighborhood/city affect you?
I love my city, the diversity of NYC is unmatched. The cultures, the music and the people in it are so immersive there’s no way to not find a spark of inspiration. Growing up though I lived in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood, and as many know gang violence runs rampant around those parts. I grew up shy and timid so my hobbies & interests would be considered “nerdy” or “weird” to those I grew up around. But I also know that those type of people get targeted for bullying so for the most part I kept it hidden & acted accordingly to my neighborhood friends. When I got into making music and my personality flourished I kinda didn’t care anymore and now you hear influences from NYC lingo/culture mixed in with those same nerdy interests I tried to hide.
What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?
Every single day I’m growing, and I’m always telling my musical peers the same thing. I’m really not the type to care about being the best at things but when I’m passionate about something best believe imma be a perfectionist at that. I’m always listening to old pieces of work and trying to figure out what I could do better or different to make the next project stand out & be even more amazing. Studying how I rhyme or the cadences & flows I use to delivery & diction. I even take inspiration from other artists wether they be big or small artists that I’ve worked with. I’m never ashamed to ask for advice to because growing and learning is such a beautiful thing.
What does your current setup look like?
COVID was a blessing in disguise because it gave me time to focus on the most important thing in my life at the moment which is music. I’ve learned a lot of things about the music realm but it gave me a chance to invest in my own personal set up at home so I could focus on my craft more. I made a cool little set up in my crib where I even offer other artists to come record at and since the beginning of 2020 it’s where I’ve recorded every single song I’ve put out.
Who inspires you? Why do they inspire you?
I have many different inspirations for different reasons. The main one is definitely Tyler, The Creator though. I discovered his music in a very low time in my life and his persona lifted me in a way I never thought possible. His whole “idc imma do what I want” demeanor really pushed the tempo for my change in personality. I was always a timid person who didn’t have my own identity but I learned to carve my own lane and blossom my personality because of him. That eventually lead into me creating music because I then told myself “f*ck it, it’s my life I should do what makes me happy” and here I am still going strong getting better in every way each day.
What is your goal when you create?
My number one goal is just to create an experience for my audience. Have them feed off of my energy and fall in love the same way I do when I listen to my favorite artists.
Why do you create?
It makes me happy & and I have full control over what I want to do in my creative space. The world is full of restrictions but this is the one thing I can fully mend.
What's your go-to song right now and why is it important to you?
Wow this one is hard because I’m constantly listening to music old and new but I’d probably say either Gravity or Dead Man Walking by Brent Faiyaz. When I put on these songs with my headphones and go out I feel like I’m teleported go a different plane of existence. That type of music is always my favorite.
What is your dream as an artist and what steps are you taking to reach your dream?
If imma be honest my main goal is to just gain a cult like fan base that would love and appreciate everything I create, it wouldn’t even necessarily have to be a big audience. As long as I can make something that touches people on a personal level and make them wanna ride with me so heavy that they go out of their way to support and show love, I know I’ve made it. So I’ve Ben building personal relationships with my key supporters as much as I can because strays what it’s all about right? Pre COVID I was doing a bunch of shows too and it was cool to talk with the crowd and show them who I was and them loving the energy.
What is the best advice you would give someone?
If you want something, if you wanna be someone just do it. Life is honestly too short to be stuck on what if’s, just go out there and try to be the best version of you possible and I promise you’ll love yourself for it.
Tell us about your most recent release
I love experimenting or working with different varieties of music and sounds, but one thing that people tell me is that no matter what I make my energy always seeps through and that’s where I got the inspiration for my new single ENERGY. I’ve been really loving the Hyper-Pop scene lately and I thought to myself “how cool would it be to bridge my high energetic lyrical rapping prowess to a genre that’s already high energy” and from there the song was created. I worked with two very talented producers (R.L Beats & Midden) who are huge in Hyper-Pop & Hip-Hop/Trap in general so we all understood the assignment.
