Tyso Interview | Respect The Producer

How did you get your name?: As much as I'd love to have a cool backstory about my artist name, there's really nothing much to it. I originally wanted the name "Tyson" because it sounded cool then eventually ended up removing the letter "n" since a lot of artists already had that name.

Where are you from?: Manila, Philippines

How did you get into Producing?: I was into making song covers back in college and I actually had a Youtube account for it. During that time I was thinking of ways to further improve the sound quality and production of what I was making so I searched up a lot of Youtube tutorials and came across a lot of videos from beatmakers demonstrating how they make their beats from scratch and how they chop up samples to create tracks. I encountered artists/producers such as J Dilla, Madlib, Mndsgn, Knxwledge, Dibiase, etc. and got really inspired to create. Since then all I've been doing is producing and listening to beats.

What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?: Other than "Youtube University", I can definitely say that listening to different types of experienced producers helped me craft my sound. Really just experimenting with how they're able to do their mixes/arrangement and comparing my tracks from theirs helped a ton. I never took up any formal education for music production so my learning was limited to experimentation, experience and research. It can get stressful at times when you just can't produce that specific sound you hear in your head. I'm not that confident enough to say that my skills are at peak since there's always something new to learn and different artists to listen to. It helps to follow the people that inspire you so you can keep learning from them.

What did your first set up look like?: My bed, my laptop, and some old speakers.

What does your current setup look like?: Now I have a table, some studio monitors, and a midi keyboard.

If you could produce for any artist (dead or alive), who would it be?: Umi. Her voice is amazing. Been a fan since she released Friendzone. As an artist, she seems genuine and authentic with her fans and I admire that about her. Our sounds aren't exactly similar but that's what I think would make the final output interesting. Other than her, artists such as Mac Miller and Armani White are also in my list. They all seem like artists who don't overthink the process and just create the music.

What is your goal when you create?: To produce music that I actually enjoy and would listen to daily.

What's your go-to song right now?: Lately I've been listening to anything from MXXWLL's latest album release, "SHEESH". The groove is insane.

What is your dream as a Producer?: To be independently known as an artist that creates good music despite only releasing instrumental tracks (for now), to find more people who would enjoy the music that I release and to make enough so that I could continue to create.

What is some advice you would give to someone with a dream to become a Producer? : Aspire to be a better version of yourself instead of trying to be "the best".
