Topher Interview | Respect The Artist Interview

How did you get your Artist name?: It derives from my name Christopher. I initially went by Yung Wiz but dropped that after I became older. Next, I tried using Chris Topher but people just kept pronouncing it like Christopher so I settled for just Topher.

How did you get into creating?: I started at a very young age. My dad is a pretty well known blues singer/musician in the state of Mississippi so you can say that it is in my blood. I discovered early in life that singing was not my calling so my alternative became emceeing. Best decision in my life.

Where are you from?: I was born and raised in Kilmichael, MS. I currently reside in Philadelphia, MS.

What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?: I watched a lot of DIY videos on YouTube. I can pick up something fairly quickly if you show it to me. Honestly, all the skills I have developed were due to my poor financial situation. I couldn't afford to pay anyone for the services I needed so developed those skills by myself.

What does your current setup look like?: I've got acoustic foam on all four walls. I have a green screen hanging on one wall for shooting videos. I use Studio One 3 and the Avantone CV-12 for recording vocals.

Who inspires you?: Eminem has always been a longtime inspiration of mine along with Will Smith, the first rapper to receive a Grammy. Some inspiration comes from modern artists such as Logic or Jon Bellion.

What is your goal when you create??: My goal is to provoke an emotional response of some sort. Whether it makes you angry or happy, sad or motivated, either response is a win in my book. If music doesn't move you then it ain't music.

What's your go-to song right now?: Actually, my group Space Force just released a full-length studio album titled Rocket Science. We have a song called Galaxy that takes me places every time I hit play.

What is your dream as an artist?: I wish to travel the world and inspire hope through my gifts and talents. Fulfilling and walking in my purpose encourages others to do the same.

What is some advice you would give to someone with a dream?: Don't dream too long unless you want it to remain just a dream. Embrace the nightmares.

Tell us about your most recent release: My most recent release was a collab with fellow veteran artist TerryJosiah. I'm very involved in politics so when Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said "...if you are having a tough time picking between me and Trump, then you ain't black", it struck a chord that resonates with decades of toxic white liberalism. In response, I decided to vent my frustration about both the black and white community for giving me so much hell as a black conservative simply because I choose to think for myself.
