Richard Pigkaso Interview | Respect The Artist

See this content in the original post

How did you get your Artist name?: I got my name from 2 places. The first reason came from my dads secret password for porn sites which was "pigkaso1" And the second reason is Pablo Picasso. He is my favorite painter of all time. My favorite quote from him is "I want to be a rich man living a poor mans life" which is what I live by.

How did you get into creating?: Ive got into creating, aka making music, around 6 years. I have been yoyoing for 16 years. After I graduated from college, I felt I had no purpose with my degree. The pressure from my parents making me graduate didn't give me drive to anything for my life. I found solace in my poetry. I was sitting one day writing and thought about turning it into music. I asked a few people about a studio from my college. Eventually I met a producer named Cauze from Coalishun Entertainment in Yonkers. He was such an amazing guy giving me free range to say anything I want on tracks. Eventually I signed on to be an artist in 2016. Since then, the magic has been happening.

How has creating changed your life?: It finally gave me a purpose. I live by a quote that says "I don't want to be able to die without doing the one thing I was born to do" and music and yoyoing IS my life. I want this life forever.

Where are you from?: Bronx New York "yurrrrrrrrrrrrrrr"

How did growing up in your neighborhood/city affect you?: I was an "inside" kid. I was always by myself and didnt have that many friends. I was bullied alot through grade school and high school. The streets were dirty, alot of gangs, and crime was a daily where I lived. I was isolated for a long time. I didnt have an actual friend till I was 18 in college. My nieghborhood molded me to be isolated form the world. It was video games and watching cartoons. College you can say helped me become social and learn about what is out there in the world.

What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?: Lots and lots of practice especially with yoyoing. It would take me days sometimes months just to learn one trick. I have broken so many mirrors in my life from windows to vanity sets. Music was actually easy for me because I felt it was always with me. I just needed a reason and an outlet to record, so I wouldn't even say rapping was all that difficult.

What does your current setup look like?: My current set up is about 200 novelty yo-yos, 20 professional yo-yos, 2 LED sneakers and a $400 LED jacket.

Who inspires you? Why do they inspire you?: 3 rappers inspire me. Eminem, Redman, and Busta Rhymes. The lyricism, punchlines, metaphors, and wordplay that they all spit was so beautiful, that I couldn't help but want to be like them. My dad is my biggest inspiration as well. He motivates me and gives honest criticism. He would tell me if my music is either good or bad. He will record my performances, save them, and we would sit down together to see how we can make them better for the next show. The would be at my showcases till sometimes past 2am knowing he has to work in 5 hours and we have an hour drive back home. He is truly my everything.

What is your goal when you create? : To make sure every time you see me perform or come up to me, I will leave an impression in your heart that will last the test of time. I want to give you a concert that you will remember, and tell me how amazed you were when you talk to me next time.

Why do you create?: Because it feels good to create something that is your own and letting the world see it. I feel alive and the process of creating is amazing. I love this life and want to do this until I die.

What's your go-to song right now and why is it important to you?: Sing for the Moment by Eminem. It makes me realize that as a rapper, I have something to offer to the world. I am a voice for the voiceless. I show that its okay to be yourself and do whatever you feel is right. DOnt hold yourself back. You are more powerful than you truly know.

What is your dream as an artist and what steps are you taking to reach your dream?: My dream is to have my own yo-yo company and travel around the world doing yoyo tricks in every country including Antarctica. I am also working on a small podcast for yo-yo players and recording artist. Finally I am making a photo series for women. I don't want to give too many details about it, but it will be something beautiful.

What is the best advice you would give someone? : My best advice to give is just live for you. The world is already judging you the moment your born so you might as well do whatever you want. Dont ever hide who you are and how you feel.

Tell us about your most recent release: My most recent release is called "Lusus Naturae" which means "Freak of Nature" in Latin. Its a story album about a time I had some magical weed called "Lusus Naturae" I took one puff and it didn't do anything. I went to sleep that night and I was transported into another world. I woke up naked in a forest and saw a crochet pig named Denise. And then out of nowhere a beautiful woman takes my pig and runs away asking me to follow her. She takes me to a powwow with different animals that each teach me a lesson about myself I must learn. I go on an adventure with each animal to learn something I never knew about who I am. I wake up in a daze, and wrote an entire album about my experience.
