Katrina Lehman | Respect the Artist Interview
How did you get into creating?: I started creating art when I was about five years old. It’s always been a passion of mine that began as simply coloring, to then tracing from books, to slowly forming my own style through sketching and drawing and exploring new styles and mediums. I’ve gained a lot of inspiration through Pinterest, YouTube, and the massive art community on Instagram that I’ve been so blessed to be a part of.
How has creating changed your life?: Creating art has become my most enjoyable and satisfying form of self expression. It’s rewarding. It’s who I am. It’s a way of escaping into my own little world where I can do what I love for hours and make something I’m proud of.
It has allowed me to make so many friends and join a community full of support and shared passion. It also brought me to my best friend, whom I’ve know for almost five years now, and also shares a passion for art. We are now working together to create our own business as a way to build a name for ourselves and give back to our supporters.
Where are you from?: I’m from Indiana, USA, but just relocated to Florida a couple years ago.
What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?: I watched a ton of YouTube videos, and learned from some of my favorite Instagram artists. It really just took a lottttt of practice and patience.
What does your current setup look like?: I have a desk in a corner of my bedroom that I’ve designated as my art space.
Who inspires you? Why do they inspire you?: Morgan Davidson and Sincerelyart on Instagram have been some of the biggest inspirations for me lately. I’m super drawn to their style and their way of bringing color, beauty, magic, and creativity into every piece they make.
What is your goal when you create? : My goal is to create something realistic and beautiful and to bring to life the image in my head that I have for each piece. And, as always, to have fun with it!
Why do you create?: I create because it’s my favorite form of self expression. It’s my happy place, and I like inspiring others.
What is your dream as an artist and what steps are you taking to reach your dream?: My dream is to make a name for myself and inspire others to explore their own style and bring creativity into their lives. I want to be able to financially support myself through my art and build my small business. I’ve started by creating an Etsy shop and getting the word out there about what I do. I definitely think that building a solid social media platform is super important, as well as paying attention to what’s trending and learning how to showcase your talent to different types of people.
What is the best advice you would give someone? : I think one of the most important things I’ve learned is to not compare yourself to others. Appreciate where you’re at, and don’t be afraid to ask for advice from those you look up to. You’d be surprised how many people are happy to offer support.
Tell us about your most recent release: My most recent art piece is one I’ve been working on on and off for several months. It’s a brilliantly colored shattered CD that, to me, displays the beauty that can be found in even the most broken things. I chose to draw it because I like to become well versed in drawing different materials and objects that are sometimes difficult to capture realistically. It was really rewarding to finally have finished it and get share it on my platform.
