Marcela Painting Interview | Respect the Dreamer

This interview was curated by START Shows

I am from Chile. All my life, I felt a passion for art, but I dedicated myself to other jobs that had to do with sales and consulting.

3 years ago, I decided to break with the routine that was already suffocating me, to be able to give way to canvases and brushes and try a new path with them... and be happy.

And although it has not been easy, I can assure you that It gives me the fullness that is so sought after in life.

I can assure you that a little bit of my heart remains in each painting because I made them from my heart, spending many days and hours.

What inspired you to pursue your dream, and how did it all begin?

What inspires me to pursue my dream of painting is the inner peace I achieve through it.
It all started because of the chaos that my job was causing in my life.

Can you share a defining moment in your journey that shaped your perspective and fueled your passion?

Incredibly, in that chaos, in the stress, in the anxiety, there when I hit rock bottom, it was in the brushes, the canvases and the oils that I found healing, tranquility and balance. Just as you need air to breathe, I need art to live fully.

How do you handle setbacks and keep pushing forward in the pursuit of your dreams?

There are always setbacks in life, but I think we all have that inner voice that urges us to continue and the important thing is to listen to it.

Are there specific individuals who have inspired you along the journey?

Of course there are. My family mainly, including my daughter who has been a fundamental pillar and my special and dear friends.

How do you maintain a balance between pursuing your dreams and handling everyday responsibilities?

It is difficult, but not impossible. I coordinate my time as best I can. We live in a society that makes us prioritize the urgent over the important, and that sometimes makes us falter.

How do you overcome self-doubt and stay confident in your abilities?

I am quite demanding with myself in terms of checking the details over and over again, but I think I am at a stage where I do not doubt and I trust in my abilities and that arises because I leave part of my heart in each canvas, so how could doubt arise as to whether what comes from the heart is correct?
I also know that many will not like what I paint, but I like to think about those who will.

Can you share a memorable success story or achievement that resulted from your determination?

I have several, but as you ask, one would be having painted 7 oil paintings of Frida Kahlo in record time (my fingers ended up collected after each day) and then seeing them installed in a beautiful place in Long Island.

In what ways do you stay motivated during challenging times?

As I mentioned before, my paintings are my passion and my balance. When I paint the world stops, there are no problems, no cold, no heat, no hunger.
I learned to stop filling myself with tragic "news", which abound, and concentrate on what is my world.

What dream are you living right now?

The dream I live today and that I asked Father Azul for is to be showing my art in galleries. Fortunately, here in New York I have found that space and I am deeply grateful for it.

What advice would you give to someone with a dream?

Dreams are what keep us alive, they are what encourage us to make changes in our lives and persevere as many times as necessary, in order to find that balance to live in peace with ourselves. The world can be upside down, as it is today, with wars that we do not understand, with fears that are constantly filling us through the media on a daily basis. The important thing is to focus on ourselves and bring out all the potential we have within, which I am convinced is powerful.
