Holy Boy Interview | Respect the Artist

How did you get your Artist name?

From a poem by beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti

How did you get into creating?

I kept getting songs and sentences showing up in my mind, like a radio. I started trying to create them or note them down with words and the music to record. I rarely get it exactly right, but they turn out interesting through the filter of not quite being able to accurately represent what I hear

Where are you from?

Bergen, Norway but living in Los Angeles, CA

What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?

I read a lot, wrote a lot, traveled, made music... Getting in touch with my intuition through automatic writing was the single biggest thing that opened my songwriting in a deeper way.

What does your current setup look like?

For creating, I like to vary. Sometimes I write on my Nord keyboard using mainly hammond/rhodes sounds, sometimes I like to start with writing in a notebook. Sometimes I go straight into Logic and start working there. Sometimes I work with my guitar, I have a Gretsch semi-hollow that I like to use. Sometimes I use a mini Casio or omnichord. Variation keeps things fresh for me.

Who inspires you?

I like to drive around and soak in the vibe, especially at night. I find I get inspired by just being in a place or taking in the mood. It sinks into your unconscious mind and brings interesting ideas. I also like to read, I'm really into Raymond Chandler's noir novels right now. And listening to my favorite 60s music takes me into a dark and interesting vibe which is conducive to creating.

What is your goal when you create?

To make something that I find exciting or moving. If it moves me, I know it will resonate with others too. I like creating for people who are the "moon child" dreamer type. Darkly romantic, and a bit sad from life.

What's your go-to song right now?

I was just listening to Led Zeppelin IV yesterday while driving, and "The Rain Song" made me feel hopeful for the future again... Actually, all of their songs.

What is your dream as an artist?

To make music that inspires souls like me, to give some deep inner sweetness to life. To tap into a memory beyond our regular lives, of what it means to exist, in some way. I don't think I can sum it up clearly, but it's something I hope and think my songs touch on at times.

What is some advice you would give to someone with a dream?

Listen to your own inner wisdom, the dream is there for a reason. Don't ask advice from people who haven't succeeded at what you want to do. Find books or films or interviews by people you admire, and let them be your mentors even if you never meet them in person.

Tell us about your most recent release

I was set to release my first album this summer, but postponed it due to current events. My most recent release was a cover of "Riders On The Storm" by the Doors in my "neon gothic" style. It was already sent into the release system before the virus outbreak, and by the time it came out the world was in disarray. It ended up being a lot more eerie and poignant to the current situation than I'd ever expected...
