Dirrty Phil Interview | Respect the Producer

How did you get your name?

My best friend's Mom (R.I.P.) gave me the nickname "Phil" when I was 17 years old. It was a had to be there moment, but long story short we were all stoned watching Super Bowl XXXIX. Dirrty simply came from her boyfriend at the time who always seemed to think I brought a new girl over there every time (wasn't the case) but he'd always ask "Where that Dirrty Phil at?" I thought it was dope so ran with it.

Where are you from?

Hagerstown, MD

How did you get into Producing?

Music has been a part of my entire life. My Mom was a Karaoke and DJ Host ever since I was a kid so I've always been around it. My journey to become a Producer came after multiple failed Punk Bands in my early/late teens so I decided to go solo and create my own music, plus I've always had this weird cosmic connection with instrumentals and love the creation process.

What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?

Studied the greats first of all and 10,000 hours plus of grind time! Stayed consistent in my development as a Music Producer and just kept making beats. Learned different DAWs and finger drumming on the MPC.

What did your first set up look like?

I had an old HP Pavilon with Sony Acid Pro and Magix Music Maker. I then got my upgrade to FL Studio 8 XXL Producer Edition courtesy of my bro Mac. Been using the same version ever since.

What does your current setup look like?

I am currently rocking the MPC Live (Standalone). Run through my Mackie Big Knob and KRK Rokit 5s. I also use FL Studio 8 XXL to cook up melodies on my Lenovo Laptop.

f you could produce for any artist (dead or alive), who would it be?

Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller/ Juice Wrld (R.I.P.), Yung Pinch, Future & of course Drizzy Drake.

What is your goal when you create?

I try not to set any goals when I create because I don't want to box myself in or limit the creative process. I usually just run with how I'm feeling or when a certain sound, vibe or melody cranks my creative juices.

What's your go-to song right now?

"Lotto" by Joyner Lucas.

What is your dream as a Producer?

To inspire a new generation of up and coming producers like those before me did.

What is some advice you would give to someone with a dream to become a Producer?

Never give up and keep grinding. Stay in love with your craft and never stop trying new things. Experiment with different DAWs, Drum Machines and Instruments. Study the greats and those who inspire you the most. ALWAYS STAY HUMBLE and PAY IT FORWARD!!!
