Cazper J Interview | Respect The Artist | @cazperjofficial

Who is Cazper J?

Cazper J is a 24-year-old upcoming American rapper/producer born in Newport News, Virginia. He is most known for his unique, high-energy beats paired with his laidback style of rap referred to as ‘Bounce Rap’, a subgenre of rap that is a combination of EDM and Hip-Hop.

How did you get your name?

My late dad was a DJ by the name DJ Cazper. When I started making music, I just took the name and added the J because my name is James.

How did you get into creating?

I playfully rapped with my friends in middle school, but I started taking writing songs heavy in 2011 after my dad passed away from a heart attack. Writing songs was my way of coping with his death. I would write to take my mind off it. 3 years later, I started producing and labeled myself as only a producer until 2020 when I embraced my songwriting ability and began to label myself as a rapper/producer

How has creating changed your life?

Creating helped me cope with depression and inspired me to learn many different artistic skills outside of rapping and producing such as poetry, photography, and graphic design

Where are you from?

Newport News, Virginia

How did growing up in your neighborhood/city affect you?

I think the neighborhood I grew up in made me more aware. I lived a typical middle-low-class family life. Middle child of 3 living with mom. The area wasn’t terrible, but you weren’t sheltered either. I had to decide early that I wanted to be a leader and not follow behind some of my friends turned to the streets and/or were making bad decisions.

What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?

To advance my skills, I just stayed consistent with rapping and producing. Over time, I got better and I did things that indirectly helped me get better like going to Virginia State University and getting a degree in Mass Communications.

What does your current setup look like?

It’s nothing crazy. Just a small home studio setup. Laptop and isolated microphone.

Who inspires you? Why do they inspire you?

My biggest inspiration is my mom. I’ve watched her make things happen with nothing, so I always try to go into every situation with the mindset that I can make it happen if I just keep going.

What is your goal when you create?

My goal, when I create, is to make my listeners feel what I’m feeling whether it be happy or sad. I want them to feel like they can put themselves in my shoes and vice versa.

Why do you create?

I create because I don’t feel right doing anything else for a living. I just have a gut feeling that music is what I’m called to do.

What's your go-to song right now and why is it important to you?

My go-to song right now would have to be my song In This Club on my new album Sorry U Couldn’t Save Me. It’s so important to me because I think it captures the essence of who I am as an artist and producer. It’s playful, high energy, it’s about a relatable topic, and it’s an overall vibe.

What is your dream as an artist and what steps are you taking to reach your dream?

My dream is to be a successful artist/producer. Currently, I’m doing performances, making good connections, making content, and building my following up

What is the best advice you would give someone with a dream?

Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.

Tell us about your most recent release

My most recent release is a 17-song album titled Sorry U Couldn’t Save Me. It’s a concept album based around apologizing to the people that I care about for being toxic. The interesting thing is that most of the album is from a nonchalant standpoint and I purposely did that because when a person is toxic, they’re usually nonchalant in public, but are depressed and vulnerable when they get alone. As the album progresses, the mood shifts from nonchalant to vulnerable and the songs are a reflection of how things change when not sober.
