Anastassia Whitty aka Saywordstaz?! Interview | Respect the Dreamer

My name is Staz, but most people know me as Saywordstaz, which is my poetry name from back in the day. I’ve been blessed to be mentored by one of the greats, Ski Beatz, and have been making music for over three years now. Music has always been my passion, something that I've loved since I was born. I grew up listening to a wide range of music, from disco to jazz, funk, and soul, thanks to my dad's influence.

What inspired you to pursue your dream, and how did it all begin?

Listening to my dad’s music growing up inspired the passion I have for music. Once I turned 34, I decided to learn how to produce. I asked my friend and mentor, Ski Beatz, who was already in the industry, to teach me, and so he did. My journey has been the dopest experience ever since.

Can you share a defining moment in your journey that shaped your perspective and fueled your passion?

During the winter of 2022, I was going through seasonal depression, and I was also heavily into photojournalism. Unfortunately, there weren’t any more assignments offered to me at that time, so I felt stuck and bored in a sense, not having another creative outlet. I became inspired by a musician named Mndsgn, who would do live cookups on his Twitch channel. From that point, I thought, “Let me give this a try and take a stab at music production.” I hit up Ski and told him how serious I was about trying this out, and he agreed to help me along the way. I believe that’s when I realized I would truly find passion in my musical journey.

How do you handle setbacks and keep pushing forward in the pursuit of your dreams?

To be honest, if it weren’t for my mentor, Ski, and my friends who supported me at my lowest times, I wouldn’t know what I would do. They always reminded me of who I am and my values. I also turn to gospel music at times when I feel like I can’t continue. It helps tremendously.

Are there specific individuals who have inspired you along the journey?

Yes, so many, but to name a few—definitely myself, seeing my journey from the outside thinking in. My mentor, Ski Beatz, I thank him every day. And my friends who are also in the music community, like Cristen Isreal, JP the Producer, Zarz the Origin, and my best friends Cho and David. I wouldn’t know where I’d be without their light and love.

How do you maintain a balance between pursuing your dreams and handling everyday responsibilities?

I just started working again in the real world, which can be very tiresome and time-consuming. Either way, I make time—whether in the mornings before work or when I get home. I also make time to produce on my day off. Literally, every chance I get.

How do you overcome self-doubt and stay confident in your abilities?

By not watching what other people are doing to the point where I get distracted from my work. I speak to my friends for support, and I also go to therapy to help cleanse my mind of any negativity. There are so many other ways, but that’s just to name a few.

Can you share a memorable success story or achievement that resulted from your determination?

In the second year of my music journey, I decided to throw a birthday beat show for my 36th birthday. It was challenging for me because it was the very first time I ever celebrated myself in such a way, and it was during a time when I was unemployed. Thankfully, I had a friend who wanted to see me flourish, so he helped throw this birthday bash. So many people came out to vibe and perform. I was so overwhelmed with joy that day, and it left such a memorable mark on my life.

In what ways do you stay motivated during challenging times?

I make music every day to get my mind right.

What dream are you living right now?

I am living my dream as a future renowned music producer. I've been making music for my latest beat tape release this spring called Sonic Odyssey 3 and my YouTube series called The Vibe Out. You can check out my work on Bandcamp and my YouTube page. I’ve been featured in magazines, podcasts, and live sets in NYC, and I can’t wait to add yours to the list!

What advice would you give to someone with a dream?

Take that route to get to that dream!
