Alex English Interview | Respect the Producer Interview

How did you get your name?

My real name is similar to my artist name Alex English so I just changed my last name to English to make it easier to remember! Now I work under my business Alex English Music LLC.

How did you get into Producing?

I have been singing since I was about 7 and songwriting since I was about 10 or so years old. Producing kind of just snowballed into my life as the years went on. I had met two people early on and they introduced me to the world of production. Ever since then, my curiosity and drive to learn just grew!

What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?

A lot of practice. This helped me learn a lot and mess up a lot on my own. I also went to school to better my skills and understand exactly what I was doing.

What did your first set up look like?

My first set up was in my basement next to my brothers’ computer where he’d play video games. Production takes so many hours so we would fight for time slots to be down there. I started on an old MacBook pro laptop (which eventually crashed on me) and a pair of speakers.

What does your current setup look like?

I moved from the basement to a room where I can work at all hours of the day! I am primarily using Ableton and use Logic from time to time. I also have added a lot of different plugins and updated my hardware.

If you could produce for any artist (dead or alive), who would it be?

Really anyone who I would mend musically with! To write with people who's minds truly connect and align is hard to find. If you can find that person, the music just flows!

What is your goal when you create?

My goal when I create is to bring the songs I hear in my head to life. Also, to make every song going forward higher quality than the last.

What's your go-to song right now?

Well, to be honest I do not listen to much music. I always try to get down what I hear in my head. My all-time favorite song though is “Bridge over Troubled Water” by Simon & Garfunkel.

What is your dream as a Producer?

My dream as a producer is to keep learning and to continue to produce as many songs as possible. As long as I can find time to produce in life I am happy.
