Cody Reks Interview | Respect The Producer Interview
How did you get your name?
It's pretty funny and not music related, been, and I still am a real geek since i was a small child, used to play Counter-Strike 1.6 when i was about 9 years old, and a pro player had a name Cody, seeing the "frag movies" I wanted to be as good as him, and i liked the name, so i "borrowed" it haha. And "Reks" is fairly recently added to my nickname, one time in a League of Legends match a guy said in chat "Damn, this guy Cody wrecks ! " and It went from there Cody (w)Re(c)ks.
How did you get into Producing?
I got into producing when I realized how much I loved Drum & Bass and how much this genre actually touched me and made me feel, I've always been close to music and wanted to produce it, I actually played guitar before, but no genre made me feel like DNB did, so then I went ahead and tried my hand at it. I'm still a newcomer in the scene though.
What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?
Bascially long sessions of trial & error in different DAWs, LOTS & LOTS of Youtube tutorials, constructive feedback & advice from more experienced producers and trying to not set limits or boundries to my producing sessions, you'd be amazed how many different things you can achieve through really weird methods & experiments.
What did your first set up look like?
As a producer ? Only my personal computer and some really bad gaming headphones. As a DJ ? A Newmark Mixtrack Pro 3 that I still proudly own today and does the job, though I never mix on it at gigs anymore, I highly prefer CDJs of any kind really, The console I just use It for home practice & private parties with friends.
What does your current setup look like?
Not much different haha, I'm a newcomer, and the money that comes from gigs and music are not enough to upgrade my equipement, though I got small helpful things like a MIDI keyboard, studio flatline headphones (AKG K240, they are legends to be honest), a better microphone, etc. But in terms of monitor/DJ equipement like CDJs... I'm not there yet haha !
How did you get your Producer/Artist name?
I answered it in the first question.
If you could produce for any artist (dead or alive), who would it be?
Gydra definetly.
What is your goal when you create?
To come up with something fresh and learn something new with each producing sessions, as a producer, I think you can always learn new stuff and methods and you have an endless ammount of possibilities in terms of sound design. Oh and also to achieve that damned snare, oh god the frustration with designing one, I think all producers can relate to this one.
What's your go-to song right now?
Been rinsing a lot Instinkt - Taste of Eternity lately, really clean track !
What is your dream as a Producer?
To get to a level where I'm happy with my tracks. It's funny because, our minds as humans in general always will demand more once a certain level is achieved, and you can say that it's a never-ending chase, because you'll always know that you can do better and the demand will make you try to evolve and do better to achieve it, I like to look at it as a self-motivation and embrace it.
What is some advice you would give to someone with a dream to become a Producer?
Honestly ? Might sound like a meme, but really... JUST DO IT ! All you need nowadays to get you started is a personal computer, you have many free programs if you choose not to invest in it, and you'd be pretty amazed what you can do in them. All you need is motivation & will.
