Respect the artist with David Ortiz Interview
How did you get into art?
Well I’ve always had a love for art and design before ever pursuing it as a profession. It wasn’t until college that I realized that this doesn’t have to be a hobby.
I majored in graphic design and was later introduced to clothing design by a good friend and mentor; Since then, I haven’t looked back.
What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?
I made a choice to completely immerse myself in anything that had to do with art & design (following the latest news and stories, visiting galleries / exhibitions studying the techniques and advise of those before me). This helped me think differently and see things from a new perspective which can be represented in my work.
What’s your prefer use of medium? (paint, Ink, digital)
As a Clothing designer I work predominantly with fabrics and sewing. my process usually starts with making a sketch and garment pattern, then I move into the cut & sew process to finally end up with a tangible product.
As a Graphic designer, I tend to have no preference. Lately I’ve been experimenting with mixed media and textures as my goal with most of my personal work is to have the consumer personify the product.
Do you have an Artist name? How did you get your Artist name?
At the moment I don’t. However I am open to using one if it feels right. But, for now, I go by my given name.
Who inspires you?
There are so many amazing artists / designers out there that I love and their work is fundamental in the way I construct my own. Although its too long to name individually, I can best put it that I’m heavily inspired by my own contemporaries. I love to see their work and think to myself "how can I build upon this and present this in my own way”.
What is your goal when you make art?
I make art to hopefully push the needle forward and inspire the next artist / designer.
What's your go to song right now?
Reborn by KIDS SEE GHOSTS
The song puts me in a good creative place and is written by two of my favorite artists.
What is your dream as an artist?
It would be a dream to be the inspiration of the next generation and be able to support my family and do what I love in the process.
What is some advice you would give to someone with a dream to become an artist?
The only thing that limits us is “us”. Continue to create and have faith in your work despite the noise. If there is passion for it then accept and embrace it.
Love who you are and love what you do the rest will fall in place.
Where can people find you? (social media, website, etc)
