Tom Ferry 'Shapes' Interview

Breakout production talent Tom Ferry has dropped his debut album ‘shapes’ on ChillYourMind’. Over 13 tracks, the Liverpudlian artist shows off every side of his studio persona from uplifting, piano-driven house through to darker, deep house cuts. Alongside 8 unreleased tunes, each featuring a diverse collection of producers, writers and vocalists, the album arrived with afrobeat-tinged new single, ‘No Tally’ featuring X-Factor winning R&B group, Rak-Su, and created alongside established producer, Embody. The Axtone-approved Tom Ferry who has recently crashed through 80 million streams, now shows in one full body of work just why he’s a genuine talent to watch.

What inspired the title?

Music makes me think of shapes sometimes, maybe like a mild form of synesthesia, or maybe just growing up listening to music and watching the visualisations on windows media player.

Where did you record this album?

The vocals were recorded remotely by the singers all over the world. The production, mixing and mastering was all done in my home studio though. Nowhere too exciting unfortunately

What is your favorite track? Why?

It’s too hard to pick. I’m really proud of the production in Just Words. There’s a trumpet sample I really chopped up and manipulated for a layer in the chorus that you can barely hear, but I know it’s there and I’m proud of how it turned out. I also really like dark of the day because it reflects the style of music I used to make a decade ago and just gives me a bit of nostalgia

What is your favorite line from the album?

There’s a lot of great lines on the album but my favourite is probably the second verse of Midnight;

Everybody thinks we’re living
Picture perfect but we ain’t
The day time seems so forgiving
But when the sun sets oh we break

Who helped make this album what it is?

Oh a lot of people, it definitely wasn’t a one-man operation. A lot of the songs have multiple writers and some songs had production elements already written that I just built on. I’m lucky to be able to work with so many talented people. Also my manager helped a lot, organising the coming together of a lot of these people and keeping everything moving

If you could remix any song and feature any artist, what song would it be and who would you feature on it?

Like a cover? I don’t know honestly because some songs are too special to cover and it just depends what inspires you. There’s a lot of artists I’d love to work with though. I’ve been on a big Pheobe Bridgers binge lately, I’d like to hear how she sounds on a house track

What's your dream?

Me and my family to be healthy and stress free. There’s not a lot else you need I think

What is some advice you would give to someone with a dream?

Start practicing. Nobody is born with any talent, everyone has to practice and there’s no better time to start than now. Every step along the way is rewarding
