Johnny Climax Interview | Respect The Artist
How did you get your Artist name?
It's actually my real name believe it or not. Most people think it's a fake so I thought it'd be perfect.
How did you get into creating?
I started rapping when I was 10 just out of boredom. I would sit at my desk in school and just write rhymes on scraps of paper. I just became obsessed with it and overtime I learned how to structure songs, make beats, record myself and mix my music. I kinda set it all a side for a couple of years but I found myself coming back to it when I needed an outlet. I was depressed for a time and music really helped me get through it. It became my therapy and gave me a place to work through it all. I never looked back after that and have dedicated myself to it ever since.
Where are you from?
Dublin Ireland
What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?
I listen a lot, I listen to a lot of great MCs and artists both old and new, I'm always looking for a new flow or new ideas and inspirations. I also studied Sound Engineering and Music Production in college. That really helped me learn how to create the sound I wanted and how to make the quality of my music improve. Other then that I just work at it, I try spend as much time everyday making music and getting better at my craft as I can.
What does your current setup look like?
Laptop, Interface and a good quality microphone. I record all of my music into Logic. Pretty basic set up but it gets the job done.
Who inspires you?
My biggest inspirations are Jay Z, Kanye West and J Cole. I'm heavily influenced by Jay's style of rhyming, Kanye's production and just all round creativity, then J Cole's ability to be personal is something I really admire. I want to be able to allow myself be that open and honest in my music. I really feel sometimes like I'm a mix of all three.
What is your goal when you create?
Whenever I create I want to bring the idea that's in my head to life to the best of my ability.
What's your go-to song right now?
That's a tough one, I've really been struggling to find what I want to listen to the last while, ever since the pandemic hit. I generally find myself listening to my own ideas and unreleased tracks I've been working on.
What is your dream as an artist?
I would like to win a Grammy, but as time goes bye I though and the landscape of music changes that goal becomes less and less important, but I'd still like to win one. I really just want to see my music reach as many people as possible and hopefully inspire others to follow they're dreams.
What is some advice you would give to someone with a dream?
Start now. Too many people put off pursuing their dreams and want to wait for the right time. Eventually they either realise there is no right time to start and wish they started sooner, or they never start at all.
Tell us about your most recent release
My latest release is called 'Your Time'. I had the pleasure of working with a talented producer/artist from London called D L K on this one. He both produced and features on the track. It was crazy recording it we only had an hour to lay down this song and my previous single 'Success Is For Certain' so the pressure was on, and I was still writing the track in the room. I'm so proud of how the track turned out, I'm convinced that it is the cheesiest song in my catalogue but I love it and it's been getting a great response too, so that's amazing.
