DJ Mac Rascal Interview | Respect the DJ
How did you get your name?
A play on "The Macaroni Rascals", which was the Japanese title for "The Jersey Shore"
Where are you from?
Staten Island
How did you get into DJing?
I started djing for my friends in college. The events started as basement parties and eventually grew into packed out bars and parade floats
What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?
I watched a ton of Youtube videos at the very start, then quickly learned more by just diving into bigger gigs. I linked up with my cousin, DJ Millo, a couple of times and that was like bootcamp for every gig.
What did your first set up look like?
First set up was an old Toshiba laptop with Numark Mixtrack Pro hooked up through an aux to a small Sony home theater system, which were 2 speakers and a small sub. I would put that on top of my freezer in the basement and throw house parties.
What does your current setup look like?
Mackie Speakers, Pioneer DDJ-FLX6, Mac Air 2 pro
If you could produce for any artist (dead or alive), who would it be?
I would want to do a B2B with A-Trak, DJ Wonder or DJ AM. All are huge influences on my style.
What is your goal when you create?
To be authentic and to challenge myself to do something new.
What's your go-to song right now?
Satisfied- Billen Ted
What is your dream as a DJ?
To share my success with my family, and to make my friends proud.
What is some advice you would give to someone with a dream to become a DJ?
Learn the fundamentals! Also, other DJs are not competition, you will find gigs that will fit your style and a community that will include you.
