DAM3 Interview | Respect the Artist | @dam3xx
How did you get your Artist name?
People called me “Dame” in high school and 3 is my favorite number so I just replaced the “e” with a “3”
How did you get into creating?
I started making music because I was in a very dark place at one time. I started out with making beats first then rapping over those beats a few months later.
How has creating changed your life?
Music was a way for me to keep going. If it wasn’t for creating music I probably wouldn’t be here today honestly.
Where are you from?
Houston born, raised in Huntsville Texas
How did growing up in your neighborhood/city affect you?
I had a lot friends that had as much as I did in Houston and it wasn’t much. Moving to Huntsville I realized a lot of my friends didn’t have as much as I did and that out things into perspective for me to do more for the community. I started engineering and recording for local artists to help them express themselves creatively. I’ll be dipping into videography soon as well.
What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?
Every day I’m always interested in the creative processes of everything. I’ve always made my own cover art for songs that I’ve released but I had to learn how to draw and use programs. Same goes for how to mix music, record video, edit videos etc..
What does your current setup look like?
I made my own home studio after recording in my garage for years. I won’t say too much about it but I will say it gets the job done.
Who inspires you? Why do they inspire you?:
There’s many things that inspire me for different reasons but the major ones I would point out is the come up of Jack Harlow or Travis Scott. It goes to show you how much road you have left to travel and if you keep going, you’ll only find what you’re looking for.
What is your goal when you create?
Making timeless music in a way that makes you feel like it’s pulling your reality into the perspective of what I’ve experienced and hopefully someone relates.
Why do you create?
For my sanity.
What's your go-to song right now and why is it important to you?
My go to song is Rhinestone Eyes by Gorrilaz.
What is your dream as an artist and what steps are you taking to reach your dream?
My dream is to be able to live off the music I make and share this wealth with my loved ones and help the community in ways that’ll scar their memories to do better for the rest of their lives. I have a long road ahead but I’m laying the foundation right now.
What is the best advice you would give someone with a dream?
Don’t give up. There’s a reason some things are cliché.
Tell us about your most recent release
My most recent release is called Summer ‘16 with my friends in my label MONARCH3 Records. Kem Kooley and Young God Blow team up with me for a music video and a single that dropped November 5th that is probably one of our favorite tracks to date.
