Davon Campbell Respect the Artist Interview

How did you get into art?

I was first introduced to art by my Grandmother and Uncle.  A lot of it started with arts and crafts based projects, and then took off from there.  All the way from elementary school to graduating as an Illustration Major from The Fashion Institute Of Technology (FIT) in 2017.

Do you have an Artist name?  How did you get your Artist name?

I go by “Day Illustration.”  Day, short for my name Davon, has been my nickname that family and friends have called me since I was born.  So, during college I naturally just added on the “Illustration” and that’s how the name became about.

What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?

Draw everyday.  Create new work every time new ideas popped up in my head.  I’ve never really felt a lack of ideas or experienced a “creative block,” so I always had new projects and ideas to throw down at all times.  A lot of knowledge honestly did come from many of my classes at FIT and I’m forever grateful for that.

Who inspires you?

The first person on that list is always myself.  Besides me, it’s the other artists I see on social everyday experiencing and achieving the goals I also wish to obtain in the near future.  My peer artists are who inspire me and push me in this respected competition.

What is your goal when you make art?

To separate my work from everyone else’s.  To give people the feeling that whatever I just produced is one of the best they’ve ever seen.  Where they go, “Wow, this kid is one of the hottest out right now.  He’s killing it like no other.”

What's your go to song right now?

“No Bystanders” by Travis Scott.

What is your dream as an artist?

To be able to support my family and I solely off of my craft/talent for the rest of my life.

What is some advice you would give to someone with a dream to become an artist?

If you don’t love this shit, don’t do it.  Don’t say you have a “passion” for this because it’s cool to say and artists are getting more exposure and growth right now.  Do it because you feel like you were born to do this and you want to do this until you can’t anymore.  If you know, you know!

Where can people find you? (social media, website, etc)
